It sounds like the battery charger you are using is overcharging the first battery and the second battery is not receiving any charge. This could be the result of using the old style trickle chargers that are not really designed to charge batteries in parallel.

I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Tekonsha Two Stage 12 V DC Battery Charger # 2024-07. I also was having a hard time getting the meter to read amperage or voltage output but I eventually was able to have the probes positioned in such a way that it did read amperage.
Apparently either the meters or the chargers are sensitive to slight changes in position and that affects the reading. This is also a 2 stage charger which can skew the results since it would not be sensing a battery... view full answer...

On my CTEK charger sometimes it loses the ground connection if using the alligator clips. I am not sure why it happens but cleaning off the ground location seems to do the trick. That is the first thing I would try.
Next I recommend having the battery tested because it may not be able to hold a charge which would disrupt the charger. There could also be some other electrical device that is drawing power from the battery due to a short.

If the battery was completely dead to start with (a "bad" battery) then not even a CTEK charger can resurrect it. If the battery was not dead or considered a dead battery then either it really needs that much desulfation or it could be that the ground connection is not good.

An increase in temperature is normal but extreme heat could indicate the battery is old enough that it cannot take a charge anymore, or that it is low on water (if it is a lead-acid type) or that the charger is simply pushing too much power into the battery.

When disconnecting the negative side of the battery you loose power to everything in the vehicle which could include the braking system because all of his vehicle grounds are no longer grounded. I think the best way to test the battery charger on your breakaway kit is to apply 12V power to the wire that connects to the 12V power wire on your trailer and then test the other wire on the module to see if there is power coming through. If power is coming through then I would guess the charger is okay but no power means it's broken. I checked out the instructions of the Bright Way Switch Mode Battery Charger part # BRW77FR for you. It states that a yellow blinking light means that the battery is bad or defective. Therefore, I recommend taking the battery in to have tested or testing this yourself using a tester like the Digital Battery Tester and Analyzer part # PT76QV.

I own and use this same # CTEK56353 charger on my motorcycle and lawn mower batteries, both of which are only about 2 years old. Usually the first two or three LEDs light up after only a few minutes of charging. After nearly 10-hours of charging definitely more than one LED should be illuminated.

There might be something in the wiring that is damaged or pinched causing a short that is discharging the battery. Inspect the wiring and fix any problem areas.
